Independence Movement leader Michel Moawad has welcomed the rapprochement between the Lebanese Forces and the Free Patriotic Movement, saying it could bolster the role of Christians on the national level regardless of the outcome of the presidential election.
"On the presidential level, it is clear that our allies have adopted different approaches. It is, however, also clear that Hezbollah does not want a president," Moawad said following his meeting with Kataeb party leader Sami Gemayel.
"Hezbollah's silence and Speaker Nabih Berri's remarks demonstrate that Hezbollah is taking the presidential election hostage to give Iran leverage in negotiations with world powers," Moawad added.
Moawad urged all factions to take action to breathe life into state institutions in a bid to stop the social and economic situation from deteriorating further.
"I'm one of many who are no longer convinced of the positions taken by the March 14 alliance with regards to political compromises and financial corruption. However, we must acknowledge that the alliance is necessary to preserve the national balance. Its disintegration would only benefit the likes of Michel Samaha," Moawad said.
Asked whether he would stand alongside MP Suleiman Franjieh to receive congratulations if the latter is elected president, Moawad said he welcomes the election of a president from his hometown Zgharta provided that he shares the same national principles upheld by the Independence Movement.
"What is important is the political platform of the president and not his person," he said. "A strong president should enjoy wide support within his Christian community and on the national level," Moawad added.
